Project Home
so what is this?
Make It Anywhere is my next project! A true companion piece to my demo album Roadside Attraction, Make It Anywhere is everything I love all rolled up into one!
Let me take you through it I have a few big goals, life goals honestly, the most overarching of which is making writing and performing music my career. After I graduated college last spring, my community got smaller and I felt like progress towards my goals got a little turned around. So, I’m going on a roadtrip (fork in kitchen), because I’m curious what music scenes in cities around the US look like right now and how new faces like my own might fit into them. I want to know how things like the pandemic and even streaming have changed them. I want to know what a day in the life looks like for working musicians in these cities. I want to know who tours there and where they play. I want to know what songs played on their radios when they were kids and what musician made them pick up an instrument or a pen for the very first time. I want to know absolutely as much as I can.

I’ll be approaching these cities a few different ways. Open mics are a solid way to get to know people in the music scenes, so best believe I will be going to loads of those. On top of that, I’ll be using my small but mighty platform to do outreach, hoping to connect with people in the places I’m visiting beforehand as well. If you are a part of a music scene, you know someone who is, or you have any insight into any of this, I want to hear your story! Please reach out, don’t be shy!

So what does this project actually look like? Here’s what you can expect to see from me:
-
Songs! I mean, it’s me. What did you expect? I’m writing songs, hopefully one for every town I stay in, that’s the goal anyway. I’ve also been sitting on some cool stuff, mainly just demo recordings, that I’m excited to get to share!
-
Other Writing! I have been writing a lot. Personal essays, thoughts on books, music, anything that catches my eye really. It’s funny, as I’ve grown increasingly confident sharing my songwriting, I have felt that singing has turned into a security blanket of sorts. I have been pushing myself out of my comfort zone and writing essays that are not to be sung. How radical lol. I hope somebody finds them interesting.
-
Process Notes! Y’all know my goal for a while has been to make writing and performing music my career. I’ve been taking steps lots of steps to make this happen for the past 5 years. In that time, it seems I have become a magnet for silliness. Obviously, I’m not to the point where my music can be my full time career, so maybe my insights are not worth replicating, we will have to use hindsight to tell. However, I can promise that we will probably have a lot to laugh about while I figure out what steps are useful and what just make for weird anecdotes.

Ethnography Results…kinda?! Girl takes an ethnomusicology class in college and decides to get out on the open road about it… well yeah! Obviously, I am an amateur ethnomusicologist, actually, even that might be too strong a title. But, I think I’ve got some interesting questions about music communities in the United States and I’m off to ask them. You can help out with this by answering some questions at the link below, but if you’re also interested in the way music communities are now and have been in the past, you’re in the right place because I’m documenting as much as I possibly can.

My goal is to put together a zine with all of my findings, stories, songs, and pictures at the end of the project! In the meantime, I’ll be posting about my progress and findings here on substack as well as supplemental videos on insta and tiktok. Let me know if there is anything specific you want to see from me too, I want to be as engaging as possible! I am so excited and so nervous and I am so so ready to share a little adventure with you all!
Stay tuned, more soon! Love ya xoxo

A very important PS!
I want to add that I am aware of how this project intersects with everything going on in the United States right now. This administration is a shit show, and the horror they cause people everyday is despicable, that all goes without saying. I know that this trip could be dangerous, but I also know how privileged I am to feel a certain amount of safety while doing a project of this nature during this time. I want to acknowledge that.
I feel very strongly that no matter what, music and the communities that form around it will continue to be a grounding force for people. Humans are better when we are working together, connection and community is how we can support people now and forever. While I can only speak to my own experience in the places I go, I hope that the documentation that comes from this proves insightful to anyone who is also looking for a music community too.
