Tiffany's
New Orleans, LA
delilah works at the carousel bar in the hotel monteleone
she gets dizzy sometimes when the faces don’t change as the people come and go
she likes to look out the window into the lamp shop across the street
where daisy glows like an angel, turning on the tiffanys
when daisy was a kid
the sun used to kiss
the freckles onto her nose
but since getting this job she stuck inside
and she’s pale as a ghost
she spends her life in the artificial bright
the shop by day, spotlights at night
she loves her life but regrets that she’s living it alone
all it would take is
a glance over at the merry go round
delilah has been patient
and daisy is looking over now
delilah is writer, sneaks her journal under the bar
and when it’s slow at the shop, daisy's boss lets her strum on her guitar
every couple of hours their gazes synchronize
and they write and write about the stars they see in each other's eyes
now delilah’s leaving letters pressing em underneath the door
and when the locks come off the lamp shop, daisy’s checking the floor
she keeps em in her cigar box but god is she looking forward
to when the secret admiration is not a secret anymore
all it would take is
coming over from the merry go round
delilah has been patient but she can’t wait!
she’s walking to lamp shop now
delilah skipped with a pocket full of tips to the other side of the street
over the fanfare of doorbell, she asked for “one chandelier please”
daisy laughed and daisy asked her preference on which one
“the one with the fewest zeros, i’m saving for this date i’m going on”
daisy felt her heart sink and her face turn pink, she took a keychain off of the rack.
she couldn’t look in delilah’s eyes when she said “this is the cheapest chandelier we have”
she left the store that night in a storm cloud
turned the corner and who did she see
but delilah leaning on a lamp post
spinning the keychain round her pinky
daisy said “wait, what about your date? you’ll be late if you don’t run.”
delilah said “if you’re not busy, i was hoping you would come”
