i don’t want to complicate things

so i’m keeping this short

til the rain rounds off the rockies

i'm white knuckling the story

your hometown is a lovesickness

what a lovely thing to say

i’m probably gonna steal it

i’m collecting turns of phrase

never felt more like my mama

never been farther away

but i’m told i kind of talk like her

in 1998

crossing fingers that this means

her mom's still with me in a way

crossing fingers i’m saying things she taught my mom to say

there is gravity in her old turns of phrase
